This is a drawing by my Grandfather on

like the one shown here. His amazing

unfortunate.

~ Here are my
Scotch/Irish
Family Coats of Arms
and brief ancestral backgrounds
~
~ (all ancestors on both sides of my family are Irish) ~
* Father's side:
(Miller - Bowman)
* Miller ~ O’Miller
& Coat of Arms
(A Miller - one who mills grain)
The “O”
means “of” or “son of” Miller. (can also mean grandson of Miller)
ORIGIN: Ireland (County Antrim) - Prior origin:
Scottish, Clan: McFarlane
McFarlane CLAN MOTTO: "This I will defend"
- In Gaelic: (still researching)
Ancient Gaelic spelling: Ó Muilleoir
Miller: One who attends a grist-mill, a
grinder of grain specifically for others, possibly one of three most ancient of
names, going back to the time just after Adam and Eve.
Meillear: (later Gaelic spelling), a merchant;
Maillor: Gaelic, from maille, armor, and fear, a
man; a man in armor, having a coat of mail, a soldier.
The O'Miller family can
trace their roots back to the ancient territories of the Scottish/English
"Border Ridings" between the 11th and 12th centuries. Their ancestral
roots go back to Strathclyde Briton origin, and first appeared in ancient
medieval records in Dumfrieshire. On the O'Miller family scroll it is seen
that from very early on the O'Miller family not only held lands and estates in
the Scottish English Border Ridings, but were also actively allied with other
influential families. They also branched out into other territories and
holdings before some took the long voyage to the New World.

[NOTE:
Sadly, my genealogy work on the Miller side of my family has about
ground to a halt. I am hoping to have more response form some of the
surviving family (mostly cousins) than I have had so far. Hopefully when
they see this site they will be more motivated to respond. But the fact is
that neither the Millers nor Bowmans of my father's generation were much
inclined to family matters such as reunions, picture-taking, or passing down
family information. We visited some while my Miller grandparents were
alive, but after they passed away family visitation and keeping up with each
other became almost non-existent. I guess I am as guilty as any, even
though my excuse is that I was several states away from most of them for the
last 47 years.
At any rate I am hoping my
son Emil Maxwell Miller (Max) and daughters Sundi Lynn (Miller) Howell and Mary
Tomica Miller (Meeky), who are all very computer-literate and can use this
wonderful tool for ancestry research, will get interested and take up this
effort.]

* Mother's side:
(Brock - Matthews)

* Brock
& Coat of Arms
(Badger - wiley, fierce fighter)
From the Saxon;
Broc, a Badger.
Broch, in Gaelic or Irish, Welsh has the same meaning. Spelling
variations include: Broc,
Brock, Brocke, Brockes,
Brocks, Brock,
O’Brock, Brockx,
Broek, and many more.
Some of the first settlers
of this name were: REUBIN BROCK (*), exact date and
place unknown, Hans Brock who landed in Canada in
1619; Henry Brock landed in Massachusetts in 1640;
James Brock settled in Virginia in 1651;
John Brock settled in Delaware in 1682; and many
others.
Motto: Virescit vulnere virtus
Motto Translated: "Courage grows stronger at the wound."
(*) NOTE: Refer to my
Brock/Genealogy Memorybooks - this is our ancestor whose son fought in the
American Revolution which gained our independence from England and established
us as a country.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

* Matthews
& Coat of Arms
(Gift of God)
From the Gaelic or Irish;
Matthews, Gift of God.
Spelling variations include: Matthew,
Mathew, Mathow,
Matthews, Matthewson,
Mathewes, Matheus; &
many more. First found in in the Domesday Book in 1086, listed as
Mathiu and Matheus.
Some of the first settlers
of this name or some of its variants were: Samuel Mathew,
who settled in East New Jersey in 1684. Elander Matthews
settled in Virginia in 1719. Andrew Mathew was
banished to a plantation on Martinque in 1747 after the Scottish defeat at the
Battle of Culloden Moor. Other Scottish immigrants include
George Matthew, who settled in St. John, New Brunswick between 1749 and
1800, John Mathew, who immigrated to Nova Scotia in
1750, John Matthews, who was sent to America as a
bonded passenger in 1770, Bayard Matthews, who
immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1784, and Agnes Mathew,
who settled in Nova Scotia between 1799 and 1820.
Motto: Omne solum viro patria est.
Motto Translated: "Every country is a home for a man."
NOTE:
Here I wish to advise family
members that siblings Bill Johnson and
Earline (Powers) Johnson of the Edgar Matthews and
Pearl Brock marriage, have gone to Ireland and physically been to the church
attended by our original Matthews descendant, and viewed the graves of his (our)
family who are buried there. These two are a wealth of information on both
the Brock and Matthews family genealogies, as well as our beloved Mote family.
Do NOT fail to contact these two if you are working on our ancestry.
And as well, contact me too, because I have exhaustively put together three (3)
big books on these families and there is a wealth of old photographs and many
other items and things of compelling interest recorded in them. I will
make a copy of these books available to anyone for only the cost of the
materials required to reproduce them on my computer/printing equipment.
